A Promise Before Fulfillment
Imagine being told, before any sign of life, to start preparing for a full house. That sounds reckless—unless the promise is certain. Isaiah 54 is God telling His people to set up the nursery because His word cannot fail.
"In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you," says the LORD, your Redeemer.
— Isaiah 54:8
From Shame to Song
1
Barrenness
The shamed one with no children, held captive in Babylon
2
Promise
God calls them to sing and enlarge their tent before restoration
3
Fulfillment
Children more numerous than the married one, possessing nations
4
Glory
Shame forgotten, reproach remembered no more
Just as Sarai was the quintessential barren one who burst forth in song, Judah is called to trust the promise more than their present circumstances. The word "nations" (goyim) echoes God's promise to Abraham—a blessing extending to all peoples.
Your Maker Is Your Husband
LORD of Hosts
Commander of heaven's armies, sovereign over all
Holy One of Israel
Set apart, yet intimately committed to His people
Your Redeemer
The One who rescues from desperate estate
God of the Whole Earth
His authority and love extend to all creation
The Greater Redeemer
Ruth's Story
A widow picking grain, spotted by Boaz who became her redeemer. He rescued her and made her his wife and mother—her son Obed, father of Jesse, grandfather of David, ancestor of Jesus.
Israel's Story
Centuries later, the Lord declares He is the Redeemer of Israel. Greater than Boaz, greater than David—the God of the whole earth, redeeming His unfaithful bride.
Spiritual Adultery and Divine Mercy
Faithlessness
Israel and Judah played the whore, breaking covenant faith with God
Divorce Decree
God issued a decree of divorce—they deserved to be cast off forever
Great Compassion
"For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you"

Do you know this God? The God of the Old Testament is exceedingly merciful and compassionate. He has every right to be done with His people forever, yet says "I will gather you!" This is the same God of the New Testament—unchanging in His mercy.
Overflowing Anger, Everlasting Love
1
Moment
Duration of God's overflowing anger and hidden face
Everlasting
The steadfast love and compassion of the LORD
God allowed Babylon to take His people captive—they didn't want Him, so He let them fend for themselves. But His judgment was brief. He would deliver them back for a greater purpose: that in Bethlehem would be born the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace—Christ the Lord.
An Unshakeable Covenant
"This is like the days of Noah to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you."
— Isaiah 54:9-10

Mountains & Hills May Depart
Why such compassion toward those who rejected Him? One reason: love, steadfast and everlasting. This is the foundation that cannot be moved.
Three Points of Application
1
Let the Redeemer's Love Silence Your Shame
God spoke everlasting love to a barren, deserted, disgraced bride. His love outlasts judgment and replaces shame with song. Discipline is never condemnation. "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8:1
2
Trust Enough to Prepare for His Promises
"Enlarge the tent" is a call to faith-filled obedience before fulfillment. This prophecy unfolds now as the gospel goes to all nations. God is forming the true offspring of Abraham from every people. Magnify Christ and multiply disciples wherever you go.
3
Proclaim Love Made Precious by Wrath
God's love is everlasting because it confronts sin and endures wrath at infinite cost. Against the dark backdrop of God's wrath, the Redeemer's love shines with true glory. "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." 1 John 4:10
Sing, O Redeemed One
Mountains may crumble. Hills may disappear. Kingdoms rise and fall. But the steadfast love of the Redeemer does not move. That love reached its fullest expression in Bethlehem—where God's wrath and mercy met in one Person.
Christ was forsaken so you would be gathered
He bore judgment so you would receive peace
The covenant is sealed by His blood—His love will never depart
So enlarge the tent. Live, prepare, and proclaim as those who are loved forever. The covenant of peace has been sealed by the blood of the Redeemer, and His love will never depart from you.
